- Dynamical cores:
- IKJ is traditional for Spectral Eulerian and Spectral Semi-Lagrangian (a compromise chosen to support both physics and dynamics)
- Initial kernel experiments indicate that IJK performs better on non-vector architectures, and just as well as vector architectures
- Changing from IKJ to IJK is problematic (a lot of work)
- Similar performance improvement from parallelizing over K, effectively decreasing K dimension. This is more acceptable to dynamical core developers, and leaves IKJ as is on vector architectures.
