Employment Opportunities at ORNL

Position:
Postdoctoral Opportunity - Computational Statistics for Large Scale and Distributed Data (ORNL-01-8-CSM) Computer Science and Mathematics Division

Position closes:   Tuesday, March 05, 2002

The Computer Science and Mathematics Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in computational statistics. The Computer Science and Mathematics Division is the premier division for research in high performance computing, applied mathematics, and intelligent systems. Basic and applied research programs focus on computational sciences, intelligent systems, and information technologies.

Basic Functions of the Position: Successful candidates will work with mathematicians, statisticians, computer scientists, and application scientists at ORNL in collaborative research to develop large scale and distributed methods for analysis of massive scientific data sets. Current projects include the development of new methods for clustering and dimension reduction of massive distributed data sets from climate and astrophysics simulations, as well as from computational biology.

Major Responsibilities: Candidates will perform leading edge research in one or more of the following areas:

  • Development of collective data analysis methods and tools for massive and distributed data sets
  • Analysis of massive and distributed data sets in applications such as climate simulation, astrophysics simulation, material science simulation, high energy physics, and genomics
  • Development of data analytic methods and tools for monitoring and control of long-running simulations
  • Development of methods and tools for simulation product intercomparison and in-depth analysis

Reporting the results in journals, technical manuals, and at conferences is expected.

Education, Experience, and Skills: Position requires a Ph.D. in statistics, applied mathematics, or computer science (summer or semester internships may also be available to Ph.D. candidates). A strong background in the mathematics of data analysis and an ability to develop large software applications in a high-performance computing environment are required. Demonstrated potential for independent research in a team environment is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation are also essential.

Remarks: No security clearance is required. Some travel may be involved. Salary and benefits are highly competitive.

Qualified candidates are invited to send a resume and a list of three or more references to: Computer Science and Mathematics Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, P. O. Box 2008, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6367 or Email to ostrouchovg@ornl.gov (subject line: Postdoc/Computational Statistics).
