Web Based Remote Control of DIXIE

Users with beam time may LOGIN .

DIXIE, a medium resolution double-crystal small-angle spectrometer, is one of twelve instruments available for neutron scattering studies at ORNL's High Flux Isotope Reactor.
Here is the DIXIE SCHEDULE.

DIXIE is the first neutron scattering instrument with a web-based interface for remote control, monitoring, and scientific collaboration. Web-based access allows researchers to use the facilities without wasting scarce time and resources for travel and lodging. At the same time, it is realized that geographically-remote users still need to be able to converse and exchange ideas with instrument-responsible scientists. Our research with the DIXIE interface will help understand how to provide control and monitoring of instruments as well as how to effectively integrate collaborative tools such as electronic notebooks, and video conferencing.

Readers can try out a demo of the DIXIE Web interface. Login as dixiedemo with password dixiedemo.

The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the highest flux research reactor in the world. Running at a power level of 85MW, the flux outside the beryllium reflectors (which surround the core) is 1.5x10e15 neutrons/cm2/sec. While the HFIR was built primarily to produce transuranium isotopes for industrial and medical applications, its high neutron flux in the thermal range makes it especially suited for neutron scattering research. In this research, a beam of neutrons is used as a probe to investigate structural and dynamic properties of materials. Neutron scattering is an important tool in many scientific fields including materials science, condensed matter physics, polymer physics, chemistry, and structural biology. HIFR's instruments are open to use by university and industrial researchers on the basis of scientific merit.
Here is the HFIR Operations Status and how to apply for beam time at HFIR.
