Evaluation of Early Systems

Overview

Pittsburgh Supercomputer Center (PSC recently acquired a 3000 processor Compaq AlphaServer SC system, which has been named "Lemieux". This system is made up of 750 ES45 4-way SMP nodes and a Quadrics "fat-tree" interconnect. Each node has two ports into the network. The processors in the ES45 are the 1GHz Alpha EV68.

ORNL EES researchers are currently evaluating the performance of the PSC system. The data described here were collected by Patrick H. Worley during January and February of 2002.

Methodology

A mix of low level, kernel, and applications code were used in the evaluation studies. However, the emphasis was on application performance, and primarily on applications drawn from global climate modeling. A subfocus was on interprocessor communication performance and its impact on applications scaling. Where possible, comparisons are made with other recent parallel platforms. The application studies are described first.
