The Computational Mathematics and Statistics Section performs research in computer science, mathematics, and statistics germane to the solution of problems of national importance; and collaborates and consults with other scientists and engineers on such problems with particular attention to technologies related to advanced large-scale parallel computing and heterogeneous distributed computing.

Groups

  • Complex Dynamical Systems-- Bill Shelton
pursues development and use of computational models to simulate complex physical systems (such as, electronic structure of disordered alloys) in order to identify and correct process and/or operational problems
  • Computational Methods-- Chuck Romine
pursues development and analysis of basic techniques and efficient numerical algorithms for solving large-scale scientific and engineering problems on advanced computer architectures
  • Computational Materials Sciences-- Bill Shelton (acting)
pursues development and use of materials processing modeling, high-performance computing, and computational techniques to expand the quantitative understanding of advanced materials and processing technologies, such as, heat flow and fluid flow in weldments, prediction of porosity and mechanical properties of cast materials, and modeling and analyzing car crashes
  • Mathematics-- Ed D'Azevedo
conducts research in applied mathematics, emphasizing the mathematical modeling of large-scale problems and their numerical solution on parallel supercomputers
  • Statistics--
conducts research in collaboration with other scientists in areas including biostatistics, computational statistics, optimal design of experiments, and large data sets.

If you have an interest in collaborating with us, contact Mike Leuze, (423)574-3125.
