The announcement has been completed, but will not be published until review by DOE is complete (4-6 weeks). A version of the announcement will be distributed electronically over the same distribution list that receives this newsletter and will be posted on the OMNET Science bulletin board. All Science Team projects that are completed this year must submit a new proposal in order to be considered for continued funding. These projects include the 3-year projects started in September of 1991, the 2-year projects started in August of 1992 and the 1-year projoect started in September of 1993. The review of these proposals will result in the selection of Science Team Projects commencing in the fall of 1994. DOE AND FEDERAL LAB SCIENCE TEAM PROJECTS Three-year lab projects that were started in Oct 1991 should also respond to this announcement, but SHOULD NOT USE THE GRANT FORMS that are used by non-Federal investigators. More detail will be sent when the solicitation is released. ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES As noted last time, Mike MacCracken is now Executive Director of the US Global Change Research Program and is located in Washington, DC. His new responsibilities include coordination of the national research program and extensive interactions with the Federal agencies that support and conduct global change research. He has resigned his position as CHAMMP Chief Scientist as well as taken a leave-of-absence from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Responsibility for Science Team activities has been divided among several individuals who will concentrate on different research aspects of CHAMMP. The new organizational structure for CHAMMP is listed below. Dave Randall (Colorado State) -- Coordinator for atmospheric GCM Research and Liason with ARM Science Team Bob Malone (Los Alamos)-- Model Development Director and coordinator for LANL HPCRC and liason to GFDL Len Margolin (Los Alamos) -- Coordinator for advanced numerical methods and theoretical predictability research. Bert Semtner (Naval Postgraduate School) -- Coordinator for Ocean GCM research and liason with WOCE modeling activity John Drake (Oak Ridge) -- Coordinator for ORNL HPCRC and liason with NCAR CCM group CHAMMP SCIENCE TEAM MEETING SUMMARY An electronic summary of the March 1993 Science Team Meeting is available from Dave Bader via e-mail. CHAMMP SCIENCE TEAM AND MODEL DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS The 1994 CHAMMP Science Team and Model Development projects meeting will be held the last week in April in Alburqueque, NM (tentative). This meeting is a high priority for the CHAMMP program and all who can attend, should make every effort to do so. JOINT ARM-CHAMMP WORKSHOP A joint ARM-CHAMMP Workshop on Cloud and Radiation Parameterizations was held at Colorado State University, September 7-8, 1993. The workshop was organized by Dave Randall and featured presentations by modeling groups on a standard set of calculations based on available data from current and future ARM sites. A set of suggestions was made by the meeting participants concerning the availability of standard data sets to test cloud-radiation parameterizations, including the development of a method to disseminate these data sets through CHAMMP. as a result ... CHAMMP INFORMATION SERVER An anonymous FTP and Gopher server will be placed at Oak Ridge for storage and dissemination of data sets and information connected with CHAMMP. More detail will follow when the service is available. INTERNET E-MAIL DESTINED FOR BADER Mail sent to Dave Bader using the address "dcb@dumbo.er.doe.gov" or "bader@oerv01.er.doe.gov" will no longer work. DUMBO is spreading his ears and flying to a new, as yet unnamed, network connection. Those using the address dc_bader@pnl.gov will not be affected. MEETINGS Workshop announcements are periodically distributed via the same e-mail list used to distribute this newsletter. A brief listing follows.
