IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR CHAMMP INVESTIGATORS

Plans for the implementation of the DOE Climate Change Prediction
Program.

As many of you are aware, we are at logical assessment point for the
CHAMMP program. Our five year collaboration with the DOE HPCC program
to support the High Perfromance Computing Research Centers at Oak Ridge
and Los Alamos National Laboratories was successfully concluded. Codes
developed by CHAMMP researchers are now being used in at least three
major climate modeling activities. CHAMMP investigators either advised
or participated in the procurement of three major computer systems for
weather and climate research. The number of journal publications has
been outstanding.

During calendar 1997, the CHAMMP program will be integrated with the
other DOE climate modeling activities to become the DOE Climate Change
Prediction Program. Briefly, the program will be configured as follows:

1: Major laboratory activities

The Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison at LLNL

Ocean and Coupled Model Development, HPCC and Accelerated Strategic
Computing Initiative and DOE 2000 interface at LANL

Climate Model Application and CSM interface at NCAR

2: University grants program

An announcement will be made this spring soliciting grant
applications in the areas of climate dynamics, numerical methods,
model parameterization and possibly other topics. Existing grants will
be extended until November 30, 1997, with additional supplemental
funding if necessary. Winners of the competition this summer will have
projects with start dates of December 1, 1997.

3. DOE and other laboratory participation

The role of DOE and other laboratories is still being defined. We
plan to have a separate meeting with DOE laboratory investigators and
representatives to develop a plan for groups that are not part of the
major laboratory activities. Groups currently preparing Field Work
Proposals should plan on completing existing projects by December 31,
1997 within existing budgets (Assume level funding at FY 97 rates for
the first quarter of FY 98). Outlines for possible new projects may be
proposed, but extensive detail should not be provided at this time, as
the Field Work Proposals will not be the basis for proposal review.

Please contact either Dave Bader (dc_bader@pnl.gov) or me
(p.crowley@oer.doe.gov) should you have any questions.

Patrick Crowley,
CHAMMP Program Manager
