CHAMMP NEWSLETTER, VOL. 2 NUMBER 1 Feb. 1992 Dave Bader, (301)903-4328 FTS 233-4328 e-mail bader@oerv01.er.doe.gov bader@oerv01.er.doe.gov (My preference for all who have INTERNET) or D.BADER on OMNET MASSIVELY-PARALLEL MACHINES FOR CHAMMP CHAMMP will be a part shareholder in the new massively parallel computers to be installed at DOE's High-Performance Computing Research Centers at Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Laboratories. The Thinking Machines CM-5 and the Intel Paragon will be used by CHAMMP investigators for early implementation of climate models on the next generation of massively-parallel computers. Use of these resources will be coordinated through the Model Development Effort. John Drake will be the point of contact at ORNL and Bob Malone will be the point of contact at LANL. Don't call these guys quite yet. The machines haven't been delivered and policies for CHAMMP use haven't been discussed. ******** Important Information for Science Team Members ********* Non-DOE Pricipal Investigators who were awarded projects in 1991 Remember how long it took between the time you received your award letter and the time the money actually appeared at your institution? If you do, then you have an estimate of a new modeling parameter, the DOE grant funding time scale. Since most of you received funding in September, you will be shocked to hear that your first year's summary report and second year continuation request are due March 15. To keep the funding pipeline flowing, please send the following items to Mike Riches, ER-74, US Dept. of Energy, Washington, DC 20585. 1. A summary of your progress and expected accomplishments for this year (no kidding); 2. An outline of your proposed acitivity for year 2; and 3. Your budget for year 2 (should be the same as in the original proposal) appropriately signed by all of the various authorized contract signers in your institution. The progress report and year 2 outline do not have to be extensive, unless the research deviated significantly from what was originally proposed. In that case, more elaboration is required. In most instances, several pages will suffice. DOE Laboratory Science Team Members It's that wonderful time of year that we all love at the labs. We know spring is just around the corner when the financial folks start talking about preparing next year's FWP. Please briefly list your accomplishments (actual and anticipated) for FY-92 and your expected progress in FY-93. These should match the tasks outlined in your original proposal that received funding. Budgets should also match those originally proposed, or in the cases where the first year's budgets were reduced, the second year's budget should remain flat. One FWP is required for each science team project at each lab. DOE Model Development Effort FWP's A single FWP from each laboratory involved in the MDE should be submitted to cover that lab's participation. Tasks and budgets should agree with those decided upon in producing the MDE plan. ************************************************************************ CHAMMP PILOT PROJECT VOLUME The CHAMMP Pilot Project report is finished and will be printed and mailed soon. NEW SCIENCE TEAM MEMBERS Final decisions have been made concerning the FY-92 Science Team projects from outside DOE labs. Announcements will be made after final approval by OHER. FIRST SCIENCE TEAM MEETING The first CHAMMP Science Team meeting will be held March 16-18 in Las Vegas, NV. All Science Team PI's should have received invitations by now. Hotel reservations are due by Feb 22. Any PI who has not been contacted should get in touch with Mike MacCracken. This meeting is open to Science Team members and inited guests only. CONTRIBUTIONS STILL ENCOURAGED Anyone who wants to contribute to the newsletter is encouraged to do so.
