EPIDEMIOLOGY ANNOUNCEMENTS [Don Hoover, Publications Officer]


CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE 2004 SECTION ON STATISTICS IN EPIDEMIOLOGY STUDENT / YOUNG INVESTIGATOR PAPER COMPETITION.

The Section on Statistics in Epidemiology (SIE) encourages students and recent graduates to submit papers to be considered for the SIE Young Investigator Award, to be given during the SIE Business Meeting at the 2004 Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM). This award of $500 and a certificate will go to the best paper presented by a "Young Investigator" at a session in the 2004 Joint Statistical Meetings sponsored by the SIE. At the discretion of the award committee, additional runner-up "Young Investigator" prizes may also be awarded.

Criteria for Assessment of Papers Include:
   o  overall quality of the work and statistical methodologic value
   o  innovation and creativity
   o  substantive impact of the method
   o  relevance to the discipline of epidemiology.

Applicants Must be:

   o  members of the ASA

   o  graduate students in Statistics, Biostatistics, or Epidemiology, or recent graduates (May 1999 or later)

from a masters or doctoral program in these departments
   o  Jointly authored papers are acceptable, but the applicant must be the lead author and present the work

at the  2004 Joint Statistical Meetings

To be eligible, applicants should:


A. First submit an abstract by February 1, 2004 to the Section on Statistics in Epidemiology for the 2004 Joint Statistical Meetings, following JSM instructions. 

B. The paper along with a cover letter requesting consideration for the SIE Young Investigator Award is then due by June 1, 2004 and should be sent to:
