ORNL at SC2004

On June 15, 2004 Jack C. Wells was appointed as the first Computing and Computational Sciences Fellow. Jack will work closely with the Directorate office and with the ORNL research divisions and centers to advance the Lab's computing agenda and to promote cross-cutting research collaborations. more

On June 1, 2004 at the Tennessee Valley Corridor Summit in Knoxville, TVA Director Bill Baxter and ORNL Director Jeffrey Wadsworth announced a partnership aimed at providing superior research resources to foster education and technology development, grow new business ventures and assist in developing the overall economy of the Tennessee Valley. TVA has a fiber telecommunications network throughout the Valley that will soon allow researchers and scientists at colleges and universities across the Tennessee Valley to connect to ORNL’s supercomputer center to further strategic collaborations, enhance academic excellence and leverage economic impact.

Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham announced May 12, 2004 that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will grant ORNL and its development partners, Cray Inc., IBM Corp. and Silicon Graphics Inc., $25 million in funding to begin to build a 50 teraflop (50 trillion calculations per second) science research supercomputer. “This new facility will enable the Office of Science to deliver world leadership-class computing for science,” said Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham. “It will serve to revitalize the U.S. effort in high-end computing.” full text of Secretary Abrahms' Leadership Class Computing Announcement, DOE Press Release, ORNL News Media Release
