Networking, Storage, and the PROBE project

Big problems have massive data requirements. ORNL's separate production and research storage systems allow us to investigate improvements without impeding scientific access.

     


High Volume Storage Applications
Car crash simulations generate about 2 GB of data per run
ARM stores 10-12 GB of new data per day (4 TB/year), users retrieve about 1-2 GB per day
Computational Forensics would need 200 GB to 800 GB of CAT/MRI volume and surface data to implement the adult identification model
Precipitable WaterClimate generates about 1 TB per run (120 year model)
Large scale genomics expecting to total 10 TB
Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) projected to generate 2GB/second (~5PB/year)
Virtual Human lung model would generate 1,000 TB (1 PB) of data for a single one second event simulation (such as a puncture wound) and perform 10 TF of calculations
