The Problem:
Neutrons play a vital role in many areas of science and technology, from
non-distructive testing of materials, to medical isotopes. Safe and effective
generation of neutron sources requires extensive analysis of neutron scattering
and neutron transport.
With extensive experience in designing and
operating neutron source facilities and pioneering work in related areas,
ORNL is well suited to address this challenge.
ORNL Solutions: ORNL is leading a 5-laboratory effort to build the world's brightest pulsed neutron source for neutron scattering research. ORNL is using state-of-the-art computational tools to design the "working end" of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility, where neutrons will be produced, moderated, and transported to the researcher's instruments. Also, ORNL is upgrading the neutron scattering facilities at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), including the development of software tools for off-site operation of neutron scattering experiments.
