Advance look at SC2001 Denver

Of special interest to attendees:

For those of you who complained about the food in Dallas, take a look at the Denver snack bar menu. And if that doesn't meet your needs, there are lots of great restaurants and brewpubs galore just a SHORT walk from the Convention Center. Anything from Mongolian Barbeque to Peruvian Seafood!

For those of you who complained about the long walks in Dallas, take heart. The walk from the closest hotel (the Holiday Inn) is shorter than the walk from the bus drop point in Dallas!

Above, left to right,

  • An aerial view taken from the Holiday Inn, showing the ENTIRE walk to the convention center, and also showing ALL the available parking (NOTE: there is NO parking garage at the CC)! The step pyramid looking structure is the entrance to the CC. The big oval structure on the near end houses the loading docks.
  • Standing at the very entrance of the CC looking back at the Holiday Inn (the big shiny building). The headquarters hotel (Adams Mark) is one block farther back and to the left of the Holiday Inn.
  • Still standing at the entrance of the CC looking at the street (14th) (where a ride would drop you off)--it is a very small plaza. Walk a block or two straight ahead and there is all kinds of food/shopping. A system of FREE trams run up and down 16th, all the way to the LODO (lower downtown) where there are even MORE restaurants and nightspots.

When you get inside, things are still pretty compact.

The lower lobby is the technical sessions entrance. (This is also where registration AND the poster session will be)

At the top of the stairs is the main lobby (show floor entrance).

Of special interest to booth coordinators:

It can be hard to get a feel for the exhibit space, just looking at the floorplan. There was an auto show setting up on our first visit to Denver, so I got some shots of the exhibit space. The shot at the right is down the length of the center aisle from the main entrance, the shot below is from the main entrance (center aisle) to the left side.

Note how bright the lighting is! They have dual fixtures (incandescent and ?), but NO dimming or zone cutoffs (unless you want to pay for a highlift to unscrew the bulbs!) Looks like "show lighting" will be the same as "setup lighting" this year.

Then there's the loading dock space (or lack thereof!)...
Things will have to be carefully orchestrated this year to get the unloading done efficiently. The photos below show fully HALF the dock space. Taken from the top and bottom of the ramp at the ONE door that will be open the first day, the photos show the narrowness of the dock, the limited parking spaces for trucks, and (taken without moving an inch) the ramp up to the ONE door.

Here are Denver CC's friendly forktruck drivers (very thrilled at getting their photo taken)! All over the city we found Denver residents to be VERY friendly, it's really a nice place to visit.
