ORNL is involved in many of the SciDAC ISICs, developing tools to enhance the research process.

ORNL has long been a leader in tools for Distributed Virtual Machines (as pioneered by PVM. The latest toolset for the heterogeneous distributed computing environment is Harness.

ORNL researchers have developed tools to aid researchers in visualizing the results of massive simulations and to allow steering of applications. Several capabilities are bundled together under the umbrella of Cumulvs.

In addition to using some of the most powerful computers available today, ORNL researchers are working with IBM to help design the computers of tomorrow. Supercomputing Online article about the "Blue Gene" CRADA

ORNL researchers are developing tools to allow "plug and play" clusters, greatly improving the efficiency of cluster installation and maintenance. OSCAR (Open Source Cluster Application Resource) is a snapshot of the best known methods for building, programming, and using clusters. It consists of a fully integrated and easy to install software bundle designed for high performance cluster computing.
