Networking Research
ORNL has substantial resources located
in the Center for Computational Sciences
(CCS) that are of great
value to SciDAC and other DOE programs.
Key among ORNL's resources are those related to storage of the
massive amounts of data generated by top scientific simulations.
The CCS mass storage
system uses HPSS, which ORNL helped to develop.

The
CCS computers include
Eagle: a 184-node IBM RS/6000 SP,
Falcon: a 64-node Compaq AlphaServer SC
together providing 1.5 TeraFLOPs of computing power.
New to ORNL at the time of SC2001 is Cheetah: a 27-node IBM
pSeries System (just before SC2001 we accepted delivery of the first
Power4 node shipped). Cheetah provides over
4.5 TeraFLOPS of computing power.
In addition to using some of the most powerful computers available
today, ORNL researchers are working with IBM to help design the computers
of tomorrow.

networking research, including
involvement in ESnet, design of the SC2001 network, and the net100 project.
