9840 drives and HPSS on AIX 4.3.3
ORNL has several StorageTek SCSI 9840 tape drives. While 9840 drives have seen HPSS use at several sites, that usage has not involved HPSS running on AIX 4.3.3 nodes (as far as we know). ORNL, facing such a need, has now demonstrated successful use of the drives with HPSS 4.1.1, AIX 4.3.3 and DCE 2.2 in its Probe storage-testing environment.
The configuration:
- All HPSS 4.1.1 servers, and STK's SSI code, run on an RS/6000 Model S80 with AIX 4.3.3
- DCE servers run on another node in Probe
- ACSLS 5.3.2 runs in another DCE cell on an AIX 4.3.2 node
(we have not tried ACSLS on AIX 4.3.3)Elements of the testing:
- created a PVR
- created 9840 storage class and 2-level hierarchy (SSA over 9840)
- imported 9840 cartridges
- created virtual volumes for those tapes
- configured a mover
- stored large disk files
- verified that migration, purge and staging worked correctly
ORNL also has several fibrechannel 9840 drives which will undergo similar testing in Probe soon.
