RAMS 2005

The Research Alliance in Math and Science (RAMS) Program is based on the belief that national laboratories and universities, working hand in hand, offer the best opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of a diverse workforce.

The Research Alliance in Math and Science program is designed to provide collaborative research experiences among faculty and students at colleges or universities and DOE national laboratory researchers. These experiences will improve the U.S. competitive research edge while encouraging and promoting Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (SMET) research throughout the academic year.

Statistics

As of 1995, of the total U.S. civilian labor force (132 million), only 627,000 had Ph.D. degrees in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (SMET), and only 341,000 of these were employed in these fields. Of these, 55,210 were women, 7270 Hispanic, 5500 African American, and 810 Native American. For SMET, only 5.6% of the enrollment in U.S. graduate schools were African American, Hispanic American, Native American (AAHANA) students; these students comprised only 2.9% of the Ph.D.s granted; they constituted only 3.4% of the labor force; and only 2.4% of full-time ranked doctoral faculty.
