Research Alliance in Math and Science

Background

The Research Alliance in Math and Science (RAMS) Program is based on the belief that national laboratories and universities, working hand in hand, offer the best opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of a diverse workforce.

The Research Alliance in Math and Science program is designed to provide collaborative research experiences among faculty and students at colleges or universities and DOE national laboratory researchers. These experiences will improve the U.S. competitive research edge while encouraging and promoting Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and Technology (SMET) research throughout the academic year.

statistics

This program is sponsored by the Mathematical, Information, and Computational Sciences Division; Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research; U.S. Department of Energy.

Program Description

Undergraduate and graduate students intern at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) during a summer term of 10 - 12 weeks. Each student is assigned to an SMET research mentor to work on a project of interest to the student, the student's professor(s), and the ORNL researcher. Requirements of the program are to keep a daily journal of activities and experiences, attend weekly technical seminars, attend skills-enhancing workshops, write a summary paper describing the research project, give an oral presentation of research results, and present the project in poster sessions and symposia at ORNL and national conferences. The participant may arrange academic credit through his/her college or university.
