Oak Ridge National Laboratory
My Profile:

I am Ryan Hurd from Memphis, Tennessee. I am currently a Junior at the University of Notre Dame majoring in Computer Science.

As a career I would enjoy working with computer graphics and animation for movies video games, movies, advertisment, or visualisations. I am also interested in working with computer applications used in things such as home appliences, automobiles, or anything using a computer.

I like to do what most people my age enjoy during their free time; music, watching TV, and obviously video games. I am also a member of the track team, which I enjoy a lot.

My Project:

I worked with my mentor, John K. Jordan, and Panos G. Datskos on this project. This project deals with a "temperature-compensation" transistor which helps keep the elecric field of a transistor constant when exposed to many different temperatures. I used 3D Studio Max to create visualizations showing how this concept works. 3D Studio Max is a very advanced (and expensive) piece of 3D modeling and animation software.

My 3D Renders:

Here are some other examples of 3D models I created using 3D Studio Max.

My Experience at ORNL:

I am very glad that I chose this internship. I was able to learn how to use one of the best graphics software there is. I always wanted to pursue a career in this kind of work and this experience has influenced me even more to pursue this. I was also able to learn web design with HTML, which is something else I am interested in.

My actual project was easy to understand because of my knowledge of electronics. I found this project very fascinating. By the time I recieved this project, I had gained experience using 3D Studio Max. It took me many tries, but I eventually got the visualization to work properly.

I personally felt that it was a little too long, considering what I was doing. And since I did not come up with the concept and work in a lab research, my only results were the visualizations.

I would definately recommend this program to anyone who is interested in 3D graphics. And there are many options to choose from when working in this field, whether it is scientific or entertainment.
