Subject: Organizational Announcement
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thomas Zacharia as Deputy Associate Laboratory Director for High Performance Computing, effective immediately. This new position reports to the Associate Laboratory Director for Physical and Computational Sciences. Thomas will also continue in his current position as Director of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division.
In his new position, Thomas will direct the Center for Computational Sciences and lead the development and implementation of ORNL's high performance computing strategy. This strategy includes the development of topical user centers for high performance computing, the strengthening of ORNL's computational and networking infrastructure, and continued leadership in terascale computational applications, algorithms, and hardware.
Thomas joined ORNL in 1987 after receiving his Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Clarkson University. He played an active role in developing and establishing the Modeling and Simulation Group in the Metals and Ceramics Division, serving as group leader from 1993 to 1998. His research has resulted in several cooperative programs with industry and academia and more than 100 conference proceedings and journal publications. He is widely recognized for his contributions to the use of massively parallel computers for modeling of materials and materials processes. Thomas serves on several national and international committees including the Review Board of the School of Computational Science and Information Technology, Florida State University; the Engineering School Advisory Board, University of Mississippi; the Steering Committee for Energy Sciences Networking; and the ASM/TMS Computer Simulation Committee. He is an adjunct faculty member at Clarkson University and The University of Tennessee and has received numerous awards including the A. F. Davis Silver Medal (1999), William Spraragen Award (1989 and 1995), the Champion H. Matthewson co-author citation (1994), and the DOE Advanced Technology Award (1993).
Thomas was appointed Director of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division in 1998, where he has developed new programs in advanced computing and intelligent systems. His vision and efforts led to the recent acquisition of ORNL's terascale computing facility, making the Laboratory home to the most powerful nonclassified computers in the nation.
Please join me in congratulating Thomas on his new appointment.
